Congratulations, The Best Is Over! is a collection of humor essays by R. Eric Thomas. Published in 2023, the book is about a multiracial gay couple, Thomas and his husband David. (That was a confusing sentence because “Thomas” is a last name, while “David” is a first name.)
Thomas is a Black humor writer, while David is a white pastor. When David lands a job at a church in Baltimore, Thomas is forced to return to the city where he grew up—a city that he has mixed feelings about.
It’s hard to return home. All your prior feelings and versions of self get mixed up with your current feelings and versions of self. That’s how I felt about visiting Michigan two weeks ago, and I was only visiting for three days!
It’s hard to be a multiracial gay couple in America. It’s hard to lose a parent (in Thomas’s case, a father-in-law). It’s hard to accidentally break a glass and smash your arm into it and start bleeding all over the place and lose your ability to think properly because of the loss of blood.
These are all aspects of Thomas’s life that he transforms into beautiful, gut-wrenching comedy.
