Welcome to the first contest of my blog! Win a free book! The contest ends Wednesday, August 29, so act soon!
One of the best books I’ve read this year is The Days of Abandonment by Elena Ferrante. To enter a drawing to win a copy of it, do any of the following things. If you do more than one, you will be entered multiple times. However, you may enter only once in each category, for a maximum of three entries per person.
- If you haven’t already subscribed, subscribe to the newsletter. (If you have already subscribed, unsubscribing and resubscribing does not count—sorry!)
- Leave a comment on one of my three posts about The Days of Abandonment by Elena Ferrante. You can comment on anything relevant to the post, or on why you want to read The Days of Abandonment. The three posts include Blocked, Who Am I?, and Imprisonment.
- Leave a comment on this post about a good book you’ve read recently. I’m always on the lookout for good books to read, and I’m sure many others are, too. (Advertising a book you wrote yourself does not count—sorry!)
You may, if you wish, use an alias instead of your real name. However, you must use your real email address, and I will notify the winner by email. The winner must send me a physical address so I can snail mail the book. (I will even pay for shipping—lucky you!!)
By entering the contest (i.e., doing 1, 2, or 3 above), you are giving me permission to, if you win, use your name (or alias) when announcing the winner in a future post.
The contest starts now—Monday, August 20, 2018, at 8:00am EDT (UTC−04:00)—and ends on Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at 11:59pm EDT (UTC−04:00). To be entered into the drawing, you must complete your entry (i.e., do 1, 2, or 3 above) within that time frame. The exact time for purposes of this contest is determined by the timestamp on my website.
I, Liza Achilles, will be the sole judge as to who is entered in the drawing (and how many times). Failure to comply with the rules, as judged by me, will result in disqualification.
You can win only one contest on my blog per calendar year.
Questions? Ask them in the comments. Good luck!!
Sounds like fun. For a second there I thought the winner would receive a copy of TP’s Against The Day, and I’d be like, what the . . . 😋
Ha! Maybe that will be the prize for the next contest. 😉
Interesting idea! Well, while I’m here I can leave a comment about a book I read and completed earlier this year that I thought was really good. Have you per chance read The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro? I thought it was cleverly written and based on a historic moment.
Yes, I have! That’s a great book, I agree. 🙂
Hi Liza, Although I read the Lilac Girls last year, it was one of my favorite books. I enjoy historical fiction. This book shows WWII through the eyes of three different women who have three very different perspectives.
I haven’t read that one – thanks for the recommendation! 🙂
Have you read The Power by Naomi Alderman? If not, you should. I actually didn’t really like it, but the plot and the characters all really got into my head and stayed there for a long time when I was done.
I hadn’t heard of that one. . . . I looked it up and it looks really good. Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll check it out. 🙂 And I think I know what you mean about not enjoying a book while reading it and only feeling its power (lol pun intended) after the fact.
Recently read and enjoyed News of the World by Paulette Jiles. Concise, elegant, and effective storytelling.
I haven’t read that one, either. Thanks for the recommendation!
This was on my “to read” list.
Beartown by Frederick Backman was one of my favorites this year.
I have been meaning to read something by Backman! Thanks for the reminder. 🙂
Okay, how about I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou? It’s her memoir that reminds me of Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, and has a foreword by Oprah Winfrey who relates to Angelou’s life.
I don’t remember there being a foreword by Oprah in the copy I read years ago; that sounds interesting. Thanks for the book recommendation!
I haven’t finished yet but i have been reading Les Mis for the first time and am really enjoying it!
Oh, wow! I started it long ago (maybe when I was in high school?) but did not finish. Glad to hear you’re enjoying it!
