Whenever I hear that a book has been banned, it makes me wonder what’s in that book. What don’t they want me to read? What don’t they want me to learn? Don’t they trust me to make up my own mind about what’s good information and what’s bogus?
Check out this infographic created by the American Library Association (ALA). Look at the line graph that shows the astronomical increase in book banning over the last two years. Also learn which books were the thirteen most banned last year.
The ALA has created an initiative called Unite Against Book Bans. According to the most recent Silent Book Club newsletter, “Silent Book Club is a proud partner of Unite Against Book Bans and the American Library Association.” I stand with Silent Book Club, the ALA, and Unite Against Book Bans in affirming that adults and kids have the right to independence in reading books.
What can you do to fight against book banning?
- Read banned books.
- Talk to people you know, both adults and kids, about banned books and censorship.
- Use social media to spread the word about banned books and censorship.
- Vote for candidates that stand against book banning and censorship.
- Take the pledge of Unite Against Book Bans: We trust individuals to make their own decisions about what they read and believe. If you agree with this statement, add your name here. I just took this pledge myself.
